Because autonomous stained glass is not required to keep out weather, I wondered from time to time about the possibility of eliminating some of the leading. I finally began exploring this possibility in the Lightsketch Series.What turned out to be the first Lightsketch was a last-minute effort to make something for Austin’s Matrix Gallery of Glass‘s debut exhibition “Pescomania”. This inspired me to continue “light lines” in what became the Lightsketch Series. Here I explored the selective elimination of all or part of a lead line in order to reveal sparkling edges of glass and narrow slivers of unfiltered light not normally seen in stained glass. Although they vary in height, each Lightsketch is fifteen inches wide, probably because the first one was that wide. I later used this technique in the Hope Chapel Windows where light lines twinkle dramatically especially in afternoon sun.
Materials: German mouthblown glass, domestic rolled glass, lenses, lead, solder, structural silicone sealant.
